Chapter 11

“And she basically treated me like a kid. I thought next time she opened her mouth, she’d breathe fire. Maybe roar a bit like the ferocious dragon lady she is. Holy crap, I do not want to go back there.” Hayley lifted the wine glass to her lips as Veronica chuckled.

“Oh dear. This wouldn’t have happened if you let me put in a word for you at the Washington Post. They love me over there.”

“Mm.” Hayley swallowed her wine and shook her head, pointing at Veronica as she did. “That’s not necessarily true. They may love you, but there are scary bosses everywhere, even at a place as prestigious as the Post. In fact, it’s probably more prevalent there. But I’m a big girl and I’ll learn how to deal with mine.”

“I know you will. Prove her wrong. And speaking of bosses, my father is walking this way.” Veronica’s eyes narrowed before she turned and smoothed her hands down the front of her black dress. “How do I look?”

Hayley sighed as her gaze raked Veronica from head to toe. The blonde looked gorgeous, of course, wearing a tasteful black evening gown. “You look perfect, of course. You always do.”

“You’re sweet. But you look amazing too, so don’t flatter me.” Veronica patted Hayley’s cheek and her gaze wandered down, tracing the lines of Hayley’s evening gown. It was as if they had made physical contact. Hayley felt her nipples bud beneath the fabric and a shiver ran through her. She supposed her dress looked fine, even if it was an inexpensive formal dress from the juniors section at the local department store. She’d purchased it for college soirees and worn it only a few times. The floor-length white sheath looked good on her, but it was definitely not some fancy label.

Veronica sparkled in the lighting of the ballroom, while Hayley felt as though she faded into the background. That was fine with her, though. She didn’t want to draw attention to herself. As far as she was concerned, she was there to support Veronica through a party she had no desire to attend.

Most of the people were here to donate money to Veronica’s father’s campaign for re-election. Or at least that was Senator McClusky’s hope. The majority of the people here would be perfect fodder for an outrageous article for the Feminist Flag. In fact, Jill would probably blow her stack if she knew Hayley was here not taking notes on the entire evening – who was who, what they said, and what they did. It was a who’s who of conservative Washington businessmen and lobbyists.

But Hayley couldn’t help that there was a huge difference between writing a piece as a call to action and writing one as a scathing expose. Taking Veronica’s father down was the last thing she wanted to do, whether she agreed with his politics or not.

“Hey, can we talk?” Hayley asked.

“In a minute. Here he comes.” Veronica squirmed a bit and then straightened her shoulders. “The old man prides himself on thinking I’m the perfect daughter.
